Matthew S. Sutphen is an Associate in the Financial Services industry group, focusing primarily on tax. He practices out of the Firm’s office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Matthew focuses on federal and state tax planning and controversy matters. Matthew previously worked in Washington, D.C., for the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), an independent bureau within the U.S. Department of the Treasury that oversees the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the IRS Oversight Board, and the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, where he served as the counselor to the inspector general and congressional affairs liaison.
Thanks to this extensive, government-related work experience, Matthew has the institutional knowledge and experience of a tax attorney practicing far longer. He is able to provide his clients unique insight and counsel through his private- and public-sector experience. There is no better person to advise a client on tax implications than someone who was tasked with enforcing the rules.
Matthew earned his law degree from Duquesne University School of Law. While working at TIGTA, he attended Georgetown Law where he earned an LL.M. in taxation and a certificate in international taxation. Matthew received a Bachelor of Arts in political science, with a minor in philosophy, from Washington & Jefferson College.
